Mission Statement:
The Asian Pacific American Coalition (APAC) mission is to cultivate civic engagement to forward the voices of San Diego’s 300,000+ Asian Pacific American community.
Objectives:
- Improve the quality of life of Asian Pacific Americans (APA) and to contribute responsibly to the social, economic and civic strength of the community;
- Increase voter education and participation in the APA community;
- Identify and mentor leaders who can mobilize and represent the community on public issues;
- Build and strengthen relationships with San Diego’s non-Asian Pacific communities;
- Promote cross cultural understanding and exchange at the local and international levels; and
- Build alliances and strengthen civic minded individuals and groups with integrity and firmness of purpose to achieve lasting improvements in the quality of life in the community.
ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN (APA) COMMUNITY ISSUES AND OPPORTUNITIES
A. EDUCATION

- Education across the life span. Education for both the young and the old
- Access to quality education and scholarship opportunities
- Increase recruitment/appointment of APA administrators, teachers and staff in the educational system
- Representation of APA in school boards and education committees
- Parent involvement in the education of their children
- Cultural sensitivity and translation of educational information to APA communities
- Provide after-school activities for young people
- Provide life-long learning experience for older adults
B. ECONOMIC PROGRESS
- Access to small business loans and capital
- Increase opportunities for business development
- Training in entrepreneurship
- Business-friendly policies and regulations
- Establishment of cooperatives
- Strengthen collaboration among APA through business associations, e.g. ABA, Chambers of Commerce
C. SAFETY AND SECURITY
- Ensure protection of the community against vandalism and criminal activities
- Access to linguistically and culturally competent services
- Increase recruitment/appointment of APA in the police force
- Provide positive alternatives to young people to lure them away from high-risk behaviors
- Access to 911 emergency services
- Adequate lighting of streets and parks
D. ACCESS TO HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES
- Access to linguistically and culturally competent health and human services
- Availability of transportation to take seniors to health services
- Culturally sensitive and language appropriate educational materials on disease prevention and health promotion
- Cultural sensitivity and translation of educational information to APA communities
- More community outreach and health education activities to APA families
- More culturally sensitive activities in Adult Day Health Care Centers
E. PRESERVATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE
- Collaboration and support of cultural events among APA communities
- Strengthen the promotions of San Diego Asian Film Festival, Asian Pacific Heritage Month in May, Asian Heritage Awards, and various
- community festivals such as Philippine Fair, FilAm Fest, Tet Festival, Chinese New Year Festival, etc.
- Cultural Center/Village with API theme –where festivities and meetings can be held
F. POLITICAL EMPOWERMENT
- Strengthen APAC (Asia Pacific American Coalition)
- Voter Registration
- Voter Education
- Identification & training of young people for public office
