Facts

Quick Facts:

  • Asian Pacific Islanders (APIs) are 16% of San Diego’s population and the fastest growing group, yet we have NO Asian-empowered district (2010 Census)
  • Other communities-of-interest are smaller than the APIs but DO have districts to represent them such as the African American (6.2%) & LGBT communities (4.8%)
  • Our originally proposed map to San Diego’s Redistricting Commission draws a 9th district with the highest concentration of APIs at 39%, more than any other map
  • By law, communities of interest are required to be fairly represented when drawing district boundaries
  • Districts help preserve communities, encourage civic participation, celebrate cultures and promote commerce
  • Districts are meant to represent the INDIVIDUAL, not special interests or big businesses
  • City districts do not affect school district lines
  • There is no evidence that housing values are affected by where city district lines are drawn
  • San Diego City Charter §5.1 requires that the new districting plan “shall provide fair and effective representation for all citizens of the City, including racial, ethnic, and language minorities, and be in conformance with the requirements of the United States Constitution and Federal statutes.”
